News Director Out After Inquiry
Peter Costa, the director of Harvard's Office of News and Public Affairs, resigned in July 1993 after an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment. The investigation, conducted by the Office of Human Resources, found that Costa had been accused by seven women, all temporary or support staff, of sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior over the past eight years. Despite Costa's denial of the allegations, he moved to a newly created position at Harvard Magazine. The investigation began after permanent staff members of the news office complained about Costa's behavior in a letter to his superiors. The exact nature of the harassment is unclear, but it reportedly included inappropriate comments and behavior. Costa stated he left the news office to take on new challenges and allow for restructuring. The University's handling of Costa's departure was low-key, with no public announcement or press release.| Creator |
