Student Alleges Harassment By Professor

In May 1987, a female Linguistics graduate student at Harvard formally charged Professor Susumo Kuno with sexual harassment. Department Chairman Calvert Watkins informed the department members via a letter, stating that the university was investigating the matter in accordance with its regulations. The complainant's name was not publicly disclosed. The incident reportedly followed Kuno's unfavorable comments on the student's dissertation, which he evaluated along with two other professors. After filing the complaint, Kuno left the evaluation committee, and Watkins replaced him. The revised thesis was later approved. Both Kuno and his attorney declined to comment on the specifics of the case.
