Harvard Medical School Prof. Gender Bias Lawsuit Moves Forward
Dr. Carol A. Warfield, a Harvard Medical School professor, filed a lawsuit against the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center that is continuing to move forward. Warfield alleges gender discrimination, claiming that Josef E. Fischer, head of the surgery department, has a history of being abusive towards professional women, including an incident where he slapped a female nurse. Moreover, the lawsuit accuses Paul F. Levy, the hospital's president, of failing to address the gender discrimination issues. In 2005, a group of department leaders investigated the interpersonal conflict and found Fischer at fault. Despite sharing these findings with Levy and HMS authorities, the conduct persisted, resulting in Warfield's removal as chair of the anesthesia department in 2007.| Creator |
