Denied Tenure, Skocpol Alleged Sexual Discrimination

Theda Skocpol, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, carries a history reflective of issues of gender discrimination in academia. This began with her tenure denial in 1980 by Harvard's Sociology Department. This rejection led her to file a grievance against the University for sexual discrimination. She continued to have a successful career afterwards, including her presidency of the American Political Science Association and the University eventually acknowledged gender discrimination. Skocpol has drawn attention to the status of women in academia, likening it to early 1970s conditions, and the controversy of former President Lawrence Summers' remarks on "issues of intrinsic aptitude" that he explained the disparity of women in science.
