Central Office Has Heard Record Number of Assault Cases
University Title IX Officer Mia Karvonides revealed that Harvard’s Office for Dispute Resolution (ODR) has seen a significant increase in sexual misconduct cases, handling 25 to 30 cases since fall 2014. These cases involve faculty, staff, and students, with one-third involving allegations of nonconsensual sexual penetration. This caseload at least doubles the previous year's figures. Karvonides noted that more than half of the cases are still open, with a mix of policy violations and non-violations among the resolved cases. The demographic data showed that just over half of the cases involved a female complainant and a male respondent. The increased caseload comes in the wake of a University-wide sexual conduct climate survey revealing that a significant portion of students experienced sexual misconduct but were unaware of or distrustful of the University’s reporting and handling procedures. In response, Harvard released a 10-page FAQ document to clarify its sexual harassment policy and procedures.| Creator |
