In Letter, Hundreds of Students Call for Changes to University Econ Depts Following Fryer Allegations
In response to sexual harassment allegations against Harvard Economics Professor Roland G. Fryer, Jr., more than 285 graduate students and research assistants, including at least 18 from Harvard, signed a letter demanding reforms in economics departments nationwide and within the American Economic Association (AEA). The letter calls for better listening to graduate students, the creation of conduct codes, and a reporting system to document misconduct. Allegations against Fryer include unwelcome sexual conduct and creating a hostile work environment for women at his lab, leading to multiple investigations. Despite these, Fryer was elected to the AEA's 2019 Executive Committee, though he resigned following social media backlash. Fryer and the AEA did not comment on the letter.| Creator |
