Lowell Counseling Center Aids Harassment Victims
The "Response" peer counseling center at Harvard, staffed by female undergraduates, has been operating for nearly a month and addressing various harassment complaints from extreme violence like rape to subtler issues like unwanted phone calls. The center, open to all students regardless of gender, aims to provide a supportive space for victims and their friends. Christine E. Hayes '84, who organized the center, emphasizes that the counselors are there to listen rather than give advice. Since early February, the center has operated in Lowell House and runs a 24/7 hotline, receiving two to three visitors each night and several weekly calls. The center, funded with $300 from the University, hopes to attract students who might not use other counseling services. Hayes is keen to involve men in the project, acknowledging that harassment affects them too.| Creator |
