The Women in the Kitchens

This article discusses the historical and evolving role of women at Harvard, focusing on the transition from Radcliffe College to modern times. Initially, women at Radcliffe faced numerous gendered expectations, such as being proper ladies and understanding their subordinate status to Harvard men. Radcliffe’s physical separation from Harvard and its numerous kitchens reinforced traditional gender roles, implying women’s primary role in domestic tasks. Despite past inequalities, Radcliffe women contributed significantly to making Harvard a more inclusive environment for future generations. The article concludes by acknowledging these women’s efforts and expressing hope for continued progress in gender equality at Harvard.
