Men Rule These Walls
A portrait of Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, the first person to receive a Ph.D. in astronomy from Harvard, was hung in the Faculty Room of University Hall last year, making her one of only two women honored among 49 portraits. This reflects a broader gender disparity in Harvard's portrait collection, where only 79 out of 760 portraits are of women. Efforts to address this imbalance began roughly 12 years ago under former Dean Jeremy R. Knowles, resulting in the inclusion of the first female portrait in the mid-1990s. However, the slow progress highlights ongoing issues, with many women who have significantly contributed to Harvard still lacking recognition. Suggestions for more dynamic forms of recognition include displaying photographs of women in action and commissioning new portraits of contemporary female contributors.| Creator |
