Workers Protest Sexism

In response to University President Lawrence H. Summers' controversial remarks about gender differences, the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers has initiated protests against alleged gender discrimination at Widener Library. HUCTW representative Geoffrey Carens highlighted the issue in an email, pointing out that women in the library's Conservation Lab, such as technicians Genevieve Butler and Jacquelyn O'Sullivan, face limited advancement opportunities and perform tasks above their pay grade without appropriate compensation. Butler reported being restricted from certain responsibilities after raising concerns and facing increased supervision. Additionally, O'Sullivan was offered a temporary position with fewer benefits compared to a male colleague's permanent position. The union has begun a grievance process and filed claims with the Massachusetts Committee Against Discrimination.
