Mailroom Worker Alleges Harassment
Johany Pilar, a Science Center mail clerk, shared her experience of sexual harassment by a co-worker during a panel discussion on gender inequality and "rape culture" hosted by the International Women’s Rights Collective. Pilar described how a co-worker repeatedly grabbed her face despite her objections. Her initial report to a female manager resulted in advice to "stop hugging people" rather than action against the harasser. After further incidents, another supervisor reassigned the co-worker. The stress from the harassment led Pilar to therapy and a hospital admission following a panic attack. Pilar, with support from the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers, has filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and is pursuing a grievance process through the union. Despite the challenges, Pilar is determined to seek justice and raise awareness about workplace harassment.| Creator |
