Tolerance Is Not Enough

The writer argues that mere tolerance from an individual is not enough to protect LGBTQ people from societal discrimination, including homophobic violence. The writer recounts his own experience with getting attacked in a "gay-bashing," though he had been afraid to identify it as a hate crime at the time, and discusses the ways in which societal discrimination have hurt gay people both within Harvard and without.
