Law School Found in Violation of Title IX after Years-Long Probe
Harvard Law School was found in violation of Title IX for its sexual harassment policies and has agreed to revise them to comply with federal law, as announced by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR). The investigation revealed that the Law School failed to respond promptly and equitably to sexual harassment and assault complaints. Harvard has entered a resolution agreement to update its policies accordingly. The Law School must now clarify which policies apply to its complaints, ensure no required mediation in harassment cases, and affirm that both criminal and Title IX investigations can proceed simultaneously. Additionally, Harvard will train faculty and staff on Title IX and conduct annual campus surveys to assess the effectiveness of its measures. The OCR found that previous Law School policies, which used a higher burden of proof, led to delayed and inadequate responses to complaints.| Creator |
