Why Rape Happens at Harvard
A survey by Ms. Magazine in 1987 revealed statistics about rape among college women: over 25% reported being raped, 84% of these rapes were committed by men known to the victims, and 57% occurred on dates. Nearly 10% of college men admitted to acts that meet the legal definitions of rape or attempted rape. These findings are consistent with other studies and reports from Harvard officials, highlighting the pervasive issue of acquaintance rape. Additionally, more than a third of men believe women provoke rape through their appearance or behavior and that resistance should determine if rape occurred. Furthermore, 63% of women whose experiences met the legal definition of rape did not consider themselves to have been raped. Harvard officials and rape counselors agree that educating students is crucial to reducing date rape. To ensure a safe environment for women, Harvard must take responsibility and enhance educational efforts, as 41% of women who have been raped expect to be raped again.| Creator |
