Poet Accused of Harassment
In 1982, a Harvard sophomore accused visiting professor and future Nobel laureate Derek Walcott of sexual harassment, claiming that he made advances during a discussion of her poetry and gave her the only "C" in his class after she declined. Walcott admitted to the behavior, leading then-Dean of the Faculty Henry Rosovsky to admonish him in a letter to Boston University, where Walcott held a permanent position. The student's grade was changed to a "pass" following her request. This incident, alongside other harassment cases involving Harvard professors, contributed to the revision of the university's sexual harassment policies. Despite the controversy, Walcott retained his post and later returned to Harvard for events.
