Police Dept. Settles Sexism Complaint

Kathleen Stanford, the only female sergeant in the Harvard police department, received a significant wage increase following the settlement of a sexism complaint she filed with the Cambridge Human Rights Commission and the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. Stanford accused Police Chief Paul E. Johnson of denying her promotions, reneging on pay raises, and treating her differently due to her gender. Despite Johnson's denial of these charges, an investigative report recommended finding probable cause for discrimination. Documents revealed Stanford's struggle for recognition and respect within the male-dominated department. Her complaint detailed Johnson's delay in her promotion, his failure to honor pay raise commitments, and his derogatory remarks.
