Doctor Found Guilty In Lawsuit

Sagun Tuli, the first female spine neurosurgeon at Harvard, was awarded $1.6 million in a sex discrimination lawsuit after a jury found Brigham and Women's Hospital and its neurosurgery department chairman, Arthur L. Day, guilty of five out of seven claims. Tuli received $1 million for a hostile work environment and $600,000 for retaliation after she criticized the hospital. Tuli alleged that Day made inappropriate comments and attempted to undermine her professional standing, including instructing her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation under threat of losing her credentials. Tuli refused a settlement offer from the hospital, seeking to drive systemic change. Day's legal counsel expressed disappointment with the verdict but noted that some claims were awarded only symbolic damages. Additionally, two other female doctors have filed similar sex discrimination lawsuits against Day, with one settled and the other pending.
